The Sheffield College has officially joined the Made in Yorkshire network!

This forward-thinking further education provider is ensuring that local young people – and adults looking to retrain or upskill – have access to cutting-edge technology, real-world experience, and strong employer connections across the region.

Located in the newly rebranded Advanced Technology Centre, The Sheffield College offers a comprehensive range of Engineering study programmes, including T Levels in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, alongside traditional BTEC qualifications. Their emphasis on blending theory with hands-on practice, bolstered by local partnerships, helps students thrive from day one.

According to Academy Director for Advanced Vehicle, Engineering and Digital Technologies, Martin Schelle-Hall: “The college is supporting young people into the world of Manufacturing and Engineering industries, through providing students with the opportunity to build their knowledge, skills and behaviours within our Engineering study programmes. Young people have the opportunity to learn theoretical knowledge and get practical experience both within our own workshop and in a work placement setting.”

Stepping into the Advanced Technology Centre, you’ll find a vast array of state-of-the-art equipment – from laser cutters and CNC machines to an immersive VR suite for exploring 360-degree engineering environments and Fanuc robots. The College has also invested in electric and hybrid motor vehicle rigs, preparing learners for a rapidly evolving automotive sector. These innovations, coupled with brand new teaching spaces and labs, underscore The Sheffield College’s dedication to closing the skills gap and aligning with emerging industry requirements.

Yet it’s not just school-leavers who benefit. The College also runs short adult courses for upskilling the existing workforce, including specialised CAD programmes that equip local manufacturers with essential design expertise. Work placements, masterclasses, and employer-informed curriculum design remain central to The Sheffield College’s approach,
ensuring graduates can make meaningful contributions the moment they step onto the factory floor. As Martin explains, “The opportunity to collaborate with a significant number of employers within the area and surrounding regions … will give our students the opportunity to network and allow them to work alongside a varied range of employers within the Engineering industry.”

By joining Made in Yorkshire, The Sheffield College aims to strengthen its ties with local manufacturing and engineering companies. Site visits, project collaboration, and open dialogue will allow the College to tailor its study programmes to real-world manufacturing challenges. Martin adds, “We want manufacturing members to support with our work
placement offer (where possible) and provide employers the opportunity to work with our students … so they can shape the future engineers that come to the Advanced Technology Centre.”

Ultimately, The Sheffield College’s mission dovetails with Made in Yorkshire’s goal of championing our region’s manufacturing community. With extensive investment in modern facilities and a commitment to equipping the next generation of engineers, the College is poised to play a vital role in nurturing local talent and driving sector growth. We look forward to witnessing the positive impact of this partnership on both students and businesses across South Yorkshire.
